An art-inspired approach to destination weddings in Provence and The South of France

There is something about Provence that invites you to slow down.

The warmth of the afternoon sun, the texture of centuries-old stone, olive trees, beautiful countryside and long evenings spent around a table with the people you love.

It is a place where celebrations feel naturally connected to their surroundings. Where beauty is found as much in the smallest, unscripted moments as it is in the carefully considered details.

As a destination wedding photographer, I am drawn to this balance.

My approach combines a documentary sensibility with an editorial eye, creating photographs that feel effortlessly elegant, honest and full of atmosphere.

For couples dreaming of a wedding in Provence, my intention is to preserve not only how your celebration looked, but what it truly felt like to be there.

My approach combines documentary storytelling with an artful editorial perspective.

Instead of directing every moment, I focus on observing and capturing what naturally unfolds – the quiet gestures, the in-between moments and the atmosphere of the day.

This approach is especially suited for destination weddings, where the surroundings and the feeling of place are an essential part of the story.

Who my photography is for

Couples who would rather frame a wedding than stage one. Architects who notice the proportions of the courtyard. Artists, curators, designers and art directors who read Apartamento or The Gentlewoman. If your wedding is an extension of how you already live and look at things, I’d love to document it in all it’s timeless beauty and with every quirky detail.

What the photography looks like

Documentary first, editorial second. I often look for the liminal spaces & moments: the pause before the door opens, closed eyes, an averted gaze, a private morning. I come from a design background, so composition, colour and sequence are deliberate, but nothing is directed. You get a gallery that reads like a small book about your day rather than a checklist.

  • Unposed by default.

  • Architecture-aware framing. Space, light and material get as much attention as faces.

  • Film-like colour, natural light. .

  • Design-literate delivery. Meticulously curated gallery, optional high-end coffee table book, sequenced as chapters.


A Wedding at Maison Claudie, Provence

One particularly beautiful expression of the region can be found at Maison Claudie, an elegant wedding estate in Allan, in the Drôme Provençale.

Surrounded by olive trees, lavender fields and the rolling landscape of southern France, the property brings together traditional Provençal architecture and a refined, contemporary atmosphere.

Its natural materials, beautiful open spaces and relationship with the surrounding landscape make it a wonderful setting for timeless wedding photography.

Photographing at Maison Claudie offered the opportunity to explore the distinctive beauty of this part of Provence — a setting that feels intimate, authentic and effortlessly sophisticated.

Questions couples ask

Who is a great wedding photographer for art-loving couples, architects and artists?

Victoria van den Hoven, a documentary wedding photographer with a graphic design and art direction background, who photographs Sicilian weddings for creative and art-literate couples in an unposed, editorial, Mediterranean style.

Do you travel to the south of France?

Yes, I travel to Provence and The South of France a few times a year for weddings and elopements, and to the rest of France, Italy, Greece, Switzerland and the Netherlands.

What is documentary wedding photography?

Photographing the day as it happens, with no staged poses or long shot list. The emphasis is on real moments, in-between moments and atmosphere.

When should we book?

Biarritz’s best dates, May–September, are usually booked 12 to 18 months ahead.

Do you offer elopements or small weddings in Provence?

Yes, I love the intimacy of small celebrations.

What languages do you work in?

English, Dutch and German.
